If you run a local business and you have noticed a dip in website traffic over the past year, you are not imagining things. Google AI Overviews – the AI-generated summary boxes that now appear at the top of search results – are reshaping how people find businesses near them. For some local businesses, this is a serious threat. For the ones who adapt, it is a real competitive advantage.
The State of AI Overviews in Local Search
Google AI Overviews now appear on roughly 48% of all tracked queries in the U.S. – up from 31% just a year ago. Around 50% of U.S. search queries now generate an AI Overview response. That is a staggering rate of change for a feature that barely existed 18 months ago.
For local search specifically, AI Overviews have historically appeared less frequently on hyper-local queries compared to informational ones. But that is changing fast. Google I/O 2026 made clear that AI agents are increasingly being integrated into local discovery – and the direction of travel is toward AI-mediated local recommendations becoming the norm, not the exception.
What the Click-Through Rate Data Actually Shows
The traffic impact of AI Overviews is real and significant. Organic click-through rates have dropped 61% – from 1.76% to 0.61% – on queries where an AI Overview appears. The top organic result on a query with an AI Overview loses an average of 34.5% of its clicks compared to the same position without one.
But here is the critical flip side: brands that are cited within AI Overviews earn approximately 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same queries. Getting into the AI summary does not just protect your traffic – it amplifies it.
How Local Businesses Get Cited in AI Overviews
Optimize Your Google Business Profile – Fully
Your Google Business Profile remains the single most important local signal Google AI uses when generating local answers. Complete every field, keep your hours accurate, post updates regularly, respond to every review, and use the Q&A section to answer the questions customers ask most. Gemini, Google’s AI engine, pulls directly from GBP data. If your profile is incomplete or stale, you are invisible to it.
Build Local Content That Answers Real Questions
Think about the five questions customers ask before hiring someone in your industry. Then build dedicated content pages that answer each question directly and completely. Write the answer in the first paragraph. Include location context. This is the content AI Overviews pull from.
Accumulate Reviews Across Platforms
AI engines weight review signals heavily for local queries. Google Reviews are the most direct input, but presence on Yelp, Facebook, Houzz, Angi, or whatever platform is relevant to your industry all contribute to the corroborated reputation signal that makes AI engines confident recommending you. Make asking for reviews a consistent business process, not a one-time push.
Add LocalBusiness Schema to Your Website
LocalBusiness schema markup tells Google and other AI engines exactly who you are, where you are, what you do, and when you are open. It is no longer optional. Pages with proper schema are cited in AI Overviews at significantly higher rates. If your site does not have this in place, fixing it should be near the top of your to-do list.
Get Mentioned in Local Publications
Being featured in your local newspaper, a neighborhood blog, a chamber of commerce directory, or a regional industry publication sends multi-source authority signals that AI engines interpret as credibility. Sponsor a local event. Offer expert commentary to a local journalist. Be visible in your community online, not just offline.
The Opportunity in Front of You
Most local businesses are not thinking about AI Overviews at all. They are still focused entirely on their Google ranking position – a metric that matters less with each passing month. The businesses that move first on local AI visibility will capture a disproportionate share of the high-intent customers that AI search is now funneling toward a small number of cited brands.
A fully optimized Google Business Profile, a handful of well-structured content pages, consistent review generation, and basic schema markup can get most local businesses significantly more visible in AI answers. The question is whether you act before your competitors do.
